Thought I'd give a heads up in case anyone here was thinking of buying an AccessPort with the hope of tweaking their own tunes, as I did. Cobb has removed Accesstuner Race, the free version of their tuning software previously accessible to all AccessPort owners, and has announced that the new version will be locked behind a paywall - a basic online training course offered by a third party - which will cost approximately $130US. In Cobb's announcement, they stated that ATR would remain free, but this is obviously not the case since they've completely removed the ability to download the previous version and are requiring a paid training course for the updated version.
The cherry on top is that Cobb took ATR down from their website in May, promising a free update that would be finished by the end of June. Then, after completely missing that deadline, they went ahead and announced the paywalled updated version due for the end of August, so nobody could even grab the install file for the old version. This is a huge slap in the face to Cobb customers who want to tune their own cars.
I, and numerous others, have attempted to contact Cobb regarding this and have been completely ignored, so I'm moving on to warning potential buyers away. If you want an AccessPort to run a Cobb OTS map, do some research to determine if it's worthwhile for your car. I can tell you right now, their Stage 1 map for my '09 Spec.B is pretty bad, boost doesn't come in smoothly but jumps as your throttle position and RPMs increase, causing pretty severe lurching during moderate acceleration (WOT and gentle acceleration are both fine), and I've been getting the occasional backfire during upshifts as well. Without access to ATR, I can't tweak the tune at all unless I want to pay for a Protuner and dyno time, or wait for the ATR update and shell out for the mandatory training. In which the Cobb rep respond only to positive comments and questions, ignores all the criticism and negative questions about Cobb's decision, and then plays the martyr when one user gets frustrated with the complete radio silence and lashes out. If you want to tune your Subaru, don't give Cobb your money; look into a Tactrix or some other solution and be sure to let Cobb know why you didn't buy their product.
This hit me last month. I've been a happy Cobb user for 4+ years now.
Full turboback, intake, and OTS tune on a 2004. Had an evap code, but just decided to vent to atmosphere for better LTFT numbers. But the code remains for an evap leak. Everyone said I could just turn the code off via the AccessTuner Race software. Couldn't find it. Even our local tuner is having issues getting the software. Sure enough, just when I need it, it's not free to the public.
I emailed Cobb and this was their response: We do not offer OTS maps without diagnostic trouble codes. Your code can frequently be fixed with the gas cap. If you take your vehicle to one of our licensed Dealers and Tuners they can probably help you out. A big fuck you from Cobb. No, sir, thanks for insulting my intelligence with my leak being the gas cap, even after I explained in detail my troubleshooting procedure and what the problem actually was. It was the purge solenoid, which even blew out twice once replaced. All I got was a 'Here, pay more money to go to our licensed dealers for a possible fix'.
Thankfully the guys at TPG Tuning (local shop) were there to help and were able to take my OTS tune and turn off the evap codes. Even did some other non-essential codes. Wanted to CEL to be out, but active for other codes if an issue did come up.
Cobb makes nice products, but over the years, their customer service has gone downhill. I remember years ago, you'd get great responses, calls on the phone with actual people, and HELP.
Now they appear to just want you to pay more. The problem is, there a very tiny subset of sketchy DIYers who are going to blow up their engines, and an even smaller portion of that group that might have any thoughts of holding Cobb responsible.
Meanwhile, plenty of people with common sense and tuning experience, who've previously been able to use ATR with no restrictions, are now being locked out and forced to pay for an absolute beginner level course because Cobb decided that simply including a disclaimer warning people about potential damage is no longer good enough. Agree or disagree with the reasoning behind Cobb's desire to ensure people are trained, you can't seriously think that taking away all access to software previously freely given away isn't a dick move. You realize that ATR hasn't always been free right?
IMO that was a bigger dick move because some people had paid hundreds of dollars for it. Not to mention Cobb has been only one of a few engine management providers who actually gave access to a rather comprehensive version of their software to the regular user. They were the exception, not the rule. But somehow they have earned your ire?
To me the only thing I don't like is how monstrously hard it is to get a tuner certification. I know of a few who could tune circles around some of Cobb's Gold and Silver certified tuners but they don't meet all of the requirements for the application.
I was definitely under the impression that ATR was always free. Yeah, that's kind of a dick move too, but IMO it's much less, because people who bought it at the time knew exactly what they were getting and they got access before all the free people. When Cobb made ATR free, people who'd previously paid for it hadn't lost anything. It's like people getting pissed that Microsoft is offering free upgrades to Windows 10 when they had to pay for every certain prior. I'm not even super pissed that ATR will be paywalled, the $130 or so is cheaper than a lot of other options, but I'm choked about how Cobb has been proceeding with the whole thing, removing access to the previous version (which I would happily use; I don't need e85/Flex fuel support or whatever else they're adding in) while still officially stating that ATR would remain free.
