Okay, maybe everyone has read and digested Hilliard's 'Greater Magic,' but I'm relatively new (only a few years of performing) and am reading Hilliard from cover to cover. One word: WOW! I'm not sure it's 'lost and forgotten' but I'm discovering it -- and digesting it -- for the first time, so until last week, Hilliard has always been 'that guy who wrote that 1,000 page book that you *really* need to read.' So, okay, I'm reading it.

It's absolutely fantastic. (And I'm reading it -- really reading it -- no cards or coins in sight. I try to imagine the sleights carefully, but I've found lately that when I read a new effect and immediately get a deck of cards, I get over-anxious and short circuit.

Without the cards, it's a whole different experience.) I remember a photography teacher I had in graduate school used to tell me that it's usually instructive to walk around *without* a camera and imagine your photographs. You miss some, sure, but you also shift the focus from the camera to your brain -- the place where the real photography happens. I'm starting to understand that the same thing occurs with magic. Anyway, 'Greater Magic.' Wizzard Veteran user 322 Posts.

Boinko: Greater Magic is in my opinion the greatest single work on Magic ever written. I have found so many references to it in the larger body of magical literature that for a time I began to have the opinion that every book written after Greater Magic's publication in 1938 was merely a clarification of this great book. Just imagine how fantastic it will be when you read it again! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A lot of great books were mentioned in this thread, but I would also add the great periodicals of our Art. While MANY are easy to get, I never saw too many purchased in shops where I have worked.

Defender Faith Philip Roth Pdf To Jpg. A DVD contains perhaps 8-12 effects? A book perhaps 70 or so - unless it's Stewart James in Print and the James File. But these collected magazines contain hundreds/thousands of great effects. I used to bemoan the fact the magicians would not buy the bound volumes of Apocalypse but, it is their loss. God forbid I should lose all of my magic library except Apocalypse and I would STILL have one of the best collections of printed magic just from these four hardbound volumes alone!

For the price, I can recommend no better periodical source than this except perhaps Hugard's Magic Monthly. All of these magazines contained phenomenal magic from the greatest creators in magic. What's more, this was WORKABLE magic. Even Ibidem, which Howard Lyons did his best to distribute to only a handful of magicians is a treasure trove. Apocalypse: 2880 pages, approximately 2000 effects Hugards Magic Monthly: ~2500 pages, ~1500 effects The Gen: 9000 pages The Sphinx: Somewhere in the five figures, ask Chris Wasshuber!! The Phoenix: 1200 pages The Jinx: 800+ pages Wizard: 1500 pages Magic Wand: Almost as large as the Sphinx Ibidem: 1000+ pages The New Phoenix Pallbearer's Review Chronicles Epilogue Chronicles Kabbala Swami/Mantra Magic (Stanyon) A few books that I have remembered but are undoubtedly on Swamp Donkey's list: Outs, Precautions, and Challenges More Eye Openers Double Double Magic with Cards Nick Trost's Subtle Card Magic vols. 1 and 2 Action with Cards Any book by Rufus Steele Magic of the Hands There are more but I am not at home where my books reside.

It will be interesting to see a similar discussion about DVDs in the next few years. Somehow, I do not think that many DVDs will ever reach the mythic status of many of the books and periodicals we have discussed here!
